wayne hospital attacking cancer
Wayne Hospital Attacking Cancer Of the estimated 1.5 million people in the United States who will be diagnosed with cancer in the next year, 85% will be diagnosed and treated at community cancer centers and physician offices.

“Wayne Hospital has recently joined the Dayton Clinical Oncology Program (DCOP) which is a non-profit organization that is funded by the National Cancer Institute,” according to Jill Brown, RN, BSN, Cancer Care Coordinator at the Hospital. “DCOP is a consortium of Ohio and Indiana hospitals that provide cancer patients opportunities to participate in national clinical trials.

” DCOP participating institutions have been involved in many important clinical trials that have led to improvements in how cancer patients are treated today, according to Brown.

“Patients with cancer want to receive the best possible therapy for their disease,” she said. “In most cases, this does not mean they have to travel to large academic medical centers. Community-based research offers patients access to national clinical trials offering new treatments without leaving home.”

According to Brown, this program will allow Darke County Patients to participate in treatment studies as well as prevention studies without having to leave their home, family and support systems.

Local physicians, Daniel P. McKellar M.D., James Sabiers M.D., and Mark A. Marinella M.D.,F.A.C.P. are current members of the Dayton Clinical Oncology Program and are able to offer patients the latest in clinical trials.

To increase access to clinical trials in the community, Wayne Hospital hired Brown as the Cancer Care Coordinator. She has worked in all areas of Oncology and has twenty years of Oncology experience. She will be working with area physicians and patients for clinical trial enrollment.

“Cancer research is essential to the development of new drugs and therapies yet only 5% of adult patients will participate in cancer clinical trials,” Brown said. “We have to realize that many treatments used today are the results of past clinical trials.”

Advances in research depend on the combined efforts of physicians, nurses and patients.

Wayne Hospital is committed to quality cancer care and providing patients the opportunity to participate in national clinical trials.
