Special Needs Surgery at Wayne Hospital

A new service is now available at Wayne Hospital. Dental care for patients who have conditions that make conventional dentistry difficult or dangerous.

Dr. Ron Dean, D.M.D. and the Hospital have joined forces to provide this important service.

Dean explained, "I did this type of patient care during my residency and it is a valuable tool for the health of those who can’t receive dental care in the traditional setting."

Dean joined his father, Robert Dean, in practice six years ago. He recently approached Wayne Hospital with the concept.

"Patients with severe disabilities often need care above and beyond that provided by a dentist in a traditional setting," he said.

"Wayne Hospital Outpatient Dental Surgery focuses on serving those who cannot receive dental care through the traditional delivery systems. Patients who have medical conditions (e.g., cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s Disease, developmental disabilities ), suffer from a debilitating anxiety toward dental treatment, or have schedules which preclude numerous extended appointments may seek care in a hospital setting," Dean said.

Wayne Hospital Outpatient Dental Surgery renders the full range of surgical, restorative, consultative, maintenance and preventive outpatient procedures completed under general anesthesia, according to Dean.

"Patients who might otherwise be denied treatment are able to have their dental needs met at Wayne Hospital," Dean said.

According to Dean, patients can be treated on either an outpatient or inpatient basis depending upon their individual needs.

Consultation is made with the patient’s physician to assure an approach which is predictable and comfortable for all involved. In addition, patients will have their treatment performed in one sitting, instead of multiple trips.

Dean is a 1991 graduate of Greenville High School and attended Miami University for his undergraduate work. He attended the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1999.

He then did an internship in Oral Surgery at Washington Hospital Center in Washington , D.C. before spending a year at Miami Valley Hospital, where he served as chief resident. Dr. Dean is on active staff at Miami Valley Hospital, Department of Dentistry/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
