Cardiopulmonary Department
The Cardiopulmonary Department at Wayne Hospital provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and supportive care to patients of all ages who are experiencing heart circulatory, and breathing related difficulties. The department consists of a diverse group of professionals that includes: licensed respiratory therapists, trained EKG/EEG technicians, licensed vascular technologists, echocardiography technicians, and a sleep study technician.

Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide such services as aerosolized medication for inhalation, airway clearance techniques, hyperinflation therapy, oxygen administration and monitoring, blood gas drawing and analysis, ventilator support and maintenance, Bipap support and maintenance as well as being members of the cardiac arrest team. Respiratory therapists also perform pulmonary function testing and smoking cessation classes on a scheduled basis.

EKG/EEG technicians are available 7 days a week from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm to perform a variety of routine and scheduled diagnostic tests which include EKGs, EEGs, cardiac event monitors and holter monitors for monitoring cardiac rhythms. EKG technicians also prepare and monitor patients during cardiac stress testing. Emergency EKGs are performed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Vascular technicians utilize state of the art ultrasound equipment to monitor blood flow through veins and arteries of the arms, legs, and neck for evaluation of blood clots and peripheral vascular disease. These services are provided Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Emergent lower venous studies may be scheduled Saturday and Sunday.

Echocardiography technicians utilize state of the art ultrasound equipment to monitor blood flow through the heart, visualize the path of blood through the valves and chambers of the heart as well as evaluate the heart muscle function. Echocardiography is offered Monday through Friday on a scheduled basis.

The sleep study technician monitors patients while they sleep to check for sleep apnea and other sleeping disorders as well as patient response to CPAP administration. Sleep studies are offered on a scheduled basis.
