PATIENT AND COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Patient and community education supports the belief that every human being has a responsibility to protect his or her health; and that, by properly handling this responsibility, the incidence of illness, disease and injury will be reduced.
The Education Department believes that health education programs should be provided to encourage and aid the public to assume care of themselves. Health education is therefore, concerned with teaching people to learn to live life in the healthiest way possible.
All patient education programs at Wayne Hospital are open to the public. Both inpatient and community programs are offered. These programs include both the patient and his or her family in the education process.
The programs available include health careers, Candy Stripe Program, school tours, post coronary care informational program, pre-op program, Ostomy program, a "Living With Cancer" course, Smoke-Stoppers Smoking Cessation Classes, and Diabetic Education programs.
Health Education also reaches members of the community through health screenings - blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose - held in the county throughout the year, and the annual Darke County Health Fair, which provides health information and laboratory testing for a nominal fee.
Other community projects that enlighten local residents about health care include: March of Dimes Walk America, Great American Smoke-Out, Teddy Bear Clinic, World Health Day, Hypertension Month, National Community Health Center Week and Women’s Health Month.
