Diabetes Newsflash Newsletter, New Year 2010
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disorder involving how the carbohydrates that we eat are metabolized. This results in higher than normal blood sugar levels. Elevated blood sugar can damage vital organs such as the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes and nerves.
The American Diabetes Association recommends that individuals with diabetes maintain good blood glucose control to prevent or lessen the effects of long term complications.
Once you have diabetes, it will not go away. However, you can control it through education and lifestyle changes. It is up to you to control your diabetes by eating right, exercising and losing any extra weight. You may also need to take medication prescribed by your physician.

These programs offer information to anyone who has diabetes. They are for individuals who are newly diagnosed with diabetes, request additional education, or are having a hard time controlling blood sugar. Every person with diabetes is different. Wayne Hospital Diabetes Education offers a variety of programs to meet your personal needs. These educational opportunities provide the training and information needed to feel confident in managing your diabetes.
The Wayne Hospital Diabetes Education Program teaches individuals to make informed choices and take better care of one's self. Individuals with diabetes make most of the day-to-day decisions regarding their health. Diabetes education provides knowledge and skills to make better decisions.
To enroll in the Wayne Hospital Diabetes Education Program, your physician must fill out a referral form. Please contact your family physician or the diabetes educator can call your physician for you to obtain the referral form.
Wayne Hospital Diabetes Education Program is an American Diabetes Association Recognized Program.
Diabetic Group Classes
Comprehensive group classes are designed for individuals who are recently diagnosed with diabetes, had a change in treatment, or wish to improve their blood sugar control. The classes focus on how nutrition, physical activity, medication, blood sugar monitoring, and problem solving work together to help achieve your diabetes goals.
The classes are held at alternating months during the day and in the evening to meet your schedule.
One-on-One Session with a Certified Diabetes Educator
You can meet privately with a Certified Diabetes Educator to learn more about using your meter, diabetes, diabetic medications, drawing up and administering insulin, complications, and controlling your disease.
One-on-One with a Registered Dietitian
One of the most popular questions asked by diabetics is, "What CAN I eat?" A dietitian will show you that by planning and moderation you can eat just about anything. A dietitian specializes in diabetic meal planning to fit your lifestyle. This is called medical nutrition therapy.
Free Monthly Diabetes Education Programs
A Certified Diabetes Educator leads a monthly program on diabetes related topics. Diabetics are encouraged to attend these educational sessions to improve blood control. Please call for a program schedule.
